South African midfielder Lehlogonolo George Matlou set for Kaizer Chiefs departure

South African attacking midfielder Lehlogonolo George Matlou is set to depart Kaizer Chiefs at the end of the season as he nears the expiration of his contract.

Despite showing glimpses of good performances, Matlou’s time at AmaKhosi looks to be nearing its end.

Matlou is nearing Kaizer Chiefs departure as his current contract with Kaizer Chiefs runs out in June 2025.

The 26-year-old has endured an injury-plagued season, featuring in just eight league matches since returning on January 5.

As it stands, there have not been any contract renewal talks between both parties, sparking concerns about his future at the club. Matlou could, however, depart the club as a free transfer.

Putting the icing on the cake, Matlou’s agent John Wilson confirmed his client and the club have yet to open contract renewal talks.

“There are currently no discussions regarding the renewal of his contract. By now, he should know if he’s staying, and that’s what gives AmaZulu a real chance.” He said.

Meanwhile, fellow South African club, AmaZulu FC has made inquiries and are seriously interested in snapping up the former Swallows midfielder.

Talks are believed to be in the early stages, but the Durban side could move quickly once Matlou officially becomes a free agent.

With Kaizer Chiefs already targeting new midfield talent—most notably Feisal Salum of Azam FC—the club is expected to release several players to create space in the squad. Matlou appears to be one of those on the chopping block.
