South African legends help shape next generation at 2026 Engen Knockout Challenge

The 2026 Engen Knockout Challenge is giving young footballers the opportunity to develop under the guidance of former South African stars who have moved into coaching.

The eThekwini leg, held just over a month ago in partnership with SAFA eThekwini, reinforced the competition’s role as an important platform for emerging players seeking to establish themselves in the game.

Among those involved were former Lamontville Golden Arrows player Philani “Dribbling Wizard” Shange, who led the AmaZulu Youth Academy Under-17 team, and former Orlando Pirates and Free State Stars defender Ayanda “Pastor Malume” Gcaba, the coach of Senzokuhle FC.

Their involvement highlighted the tournament’s continuing legacy of developing young talent. Having experienced the demands of football at the highest level, the former players are now passing their knowledge and expertise to the next generation from the touchline.

Their work extends beyond technical coaching. By guiding young footballers, the former stars help them understand the importance of professionalism, teamwork, leadership and discipline, both on and off the pitch.

Their continued presence in the game also ensures that lessons gained during their playing careers are shared with future generations. The transition from player to coach allows them to remain involved in football while helping others progress.

Gcaba said his love of sport and his leadership qualities influenced his decision to enter coaching after retiring as a player.

“I decided to become a coach after my playing career because I’ve always loved sport. Through football, I was able to make a name for myself, and I’ve always seen myself as a leader.”

He said his own journey had shown him the level of commitment required to reach the professional game. That experience encouraged him to contribute to the development of young players.

Gcaba added that coaching gave him the chance to pass on the knowledge and experience he had gained throughout his career. His aim is to help the players reach their potential while reflecting the theme of this year’s competition: “Where Diski Legends Start.”
