South African forward Cassius Mailula linked with Kaizer Chiefs move after Toronto FC exit
Former Mamelodi Sundowns and Toronto FC forward Cassius Mailula could make a sensational return to South Africa, with Kaizer Chiefs reportedly showing interest in securing his services ahead of the new Premiership season.
As per sources, the Soweto giants have approached the 24-year-old attacker as they look to strengthen their squad during the current transfer window.
Mailula became a free agent after parting ways with Major League Soccer outfit Toronto FC last week, bringing an end to a challenging spell in North America that failed to match the expectations surrounding his arrival.
The talented forward moved to Toronto FC after an impressive breakthrough season with Mamelodi Sundowns, where he announced himself as one of South Africa’s brightest attacking prospects. His pace, direct running and eye for goal earned him widespread recognition and a move abroad.
However, his time in the MLS did not produce the impact many had anticipated. Despite his potential, Mailula struggled to rediscover the form that made him a standout performer at Sundowns, leading Toronto FC to explore options that could provide him with more regular playing opportunities.
The club attempted to send him out on loan, with Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca and Belgian side KV Kortrijk among the teams linked with a temporary move. However, those opportunities did not materialise into a permanent solution, and Mailula remained unable to regain the level that initially attracted Toronto’s interest.
Now back on the market, the South African forward has emerged as a possible target for Kaizer Chiefs, who are looking to add attacking quality to their squad under their rebuilding project.
Chiefs have traditionally shown a willingness to sign experienced players available on free transfers, and Mailula’s profile fits the club’s recruitment strategy. His familiarity with the local league, previous success at Mamelodi Sundowns and ability to operate in multiple attacking positions make him an attractive option for Amakhosi.
The Soweto giants are in the process of reshaping their squad ahead of the new campaign and have so far announced the arrivals of defender Thabo Moloisane and goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner.
With limited new additions confirmed, Chiefs are expected to continue their search for reinforcements, particularly in the attacking department where they are aiming to improve their goal-scoring output.
For Mailula, a move to Naturena could provide the perfect opportunity to revive his career and return to the form that made him one of the most exciting young players in South African football.
A switch to Kaizer Chiefs would also give him a chance to prove his quality at one of the country’s biggest clubs and potentially reignite his ambitions of returning to the national team setup.
Although no official agreement has been reached, the possibility of Mailula wearing the famous gold and black jersey next season continues to gain momentum as both player and club weigh up their options ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
