South Africa to Part Ways with Coach Gordon Igesund After Disappointing Tenure
Johannesburg — The South African Football Association (SAFA) has confirmed that Gordon Igesund’s contract as head coach of the national team, Bafana Bafana, will not be renewed. This announcement was made by SAFA president Danny Jordaan at a press conference in Johannesburg.
Igesund, who has been in charge for three years, concluded his reign with a goalless draw against New Zealand in his final match at the helm. Despite his experience and previous domestic success, Igesund failed to meet the expectations set for the national team during his tenure.
Under his leadership, Bafana Bafana missed out on qualification for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and suffered a disappointing group stage exit at the 2013 tournament, which South Africa hosted. The team also endured a poor performance at the 2014 African Nations Championship (CHAN), further raising concerns about progress under Igesund.
The SAFA president emphasized the need for a new direction, stating: “We will not be renewing Gordon Igesund’s contract. A new coach is being sought.” While the Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz has been widely speculated as a potential successor, Jordaan was cautious, saying no official decision had yet been made. “Bafana Bafana is a global brand. We must restore this brand,” he added.
Igesund’s departure marks the end of a challenging period for South African football, which has struggled to replicate the successes of past generations on the continental stage. The upcoming appointment of a new coach is expected to bring renewed hope for the team ahead of future international competitions.
