South African defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi over the moon after completing Chicago Fire move
Orlando Pirates defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi says he is thrilled to begin a new chapter in Major League Soccer after sealing a move to Chicago Fire.
The 20-year-old’s switch, reported to be worth around US$3 million (over R50 million) according to veteran sportscaster Mark Gleeson, was confirmed by the MLS club on Tuesday afternoon.
His arrival adds to a league already boasting stars such as Lionel Messi, Thomas Müller, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, Wilfried Zaha and Luis Suárez.
Mbokazi shared his excitement after the announcement, expressing confidence as he prepares for life in the United States.
“My name is Mbekezeli Mbokazi, and I’m excited to join this lovely club,” he told the club’s media.
He added, “I trust that everything will go well as I join this club. Chicago Fire is the name of the team. Thank you. Vamos!”
Before officially joining his new teammates, Mbokazi has been cleared to feature for the Buccaneers in this weekend’s Carling Knockout Cup final.
Once he completes his final duties with Pirates, he is expected to wear the number four jersey at Chicago Fire.
