South African defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi completes long-term move to Chicago Fire

Mbekezeli Mbokazi has completed a permanent transfer from Orlando Pirates to Chicago Fire, with the Major League Soccer side confirming on Tuesday, 2 December, that the 19-year-old defender has signed a four-year deal that includes an additional option year.

The agreement ends weeks of negotiations between the two clubs and marks the first overseas move for the highly rated South African, who is considered one of his country’s most promising young defenders.

Chicago Fire announced that Mbokazi will join the squad under a U22 Initiative slot and occupy an international roster position as he begins his career in the United States.

The club shared the news in a post on social media: Mbokazi will occupy a U-22 initiative slot and an international roster position, and his contract will run through 2029.

Mbokazi successfully completed his medical before finalising personal terms, clearing the way for his integration into the Fire’s long-term project.

He will wear the number 4 shirt upon his arrival in Chicago, signalling the club’s intention to position him as a key figure in their defensive rebuild.

Before leaving South Africa, the youngster is set to play one final fixture for Orlando Pirates against Marumo Gallants, giving supporters a last opportunity to see him in the black-and-white jersey.

Despite his age, Mbokazi has already earned three senior caps for Bafana Bafana and is preparing to represent his national team at the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco — his first major international tournament.

He is expected to join Chicago Fire in February ahead of the start of the 2026 MLS regular season, once his AFCON duties conclude.

The move offers Mbokazi both a significant career step and the chance to develop in a league known for providing pathways to European football.

Chicago Fire, meanwhile, view the teenager as a long-term investment with the potential to strengthen their defensive structure for years to come.
