South African outfit Kaizer Chiefs have mutually parted ways with defender Bongani Sam ahead of the start of the 2025/26 football campaign.
Sam leaves Kaizer Chiefs, concluding a surprising tenure without making a single competitive appearance for the club.
“After just one season, Kaizer Chiefs have amicably agreed to part ways with defender Bongani Sam. The Gqeberha native joined the team from Orlando Pirates in July 2024. Wishing Bongani all the best.” wrote the club.
The defender joined the Soweto giants in 2024 from Orlando Pirates, but spent the recently concluded campaign on loan at Moroka Swallows. The 27-year-old struggled to secure a long-term spot during his loan stint with Moroka Swallows.
He arrived at Kaizer Chiefs with high ambition but his spell at the club was marred by persistent injury setbacks
The Soweto giants have cut ties with Edmilson Dove and Ranga Chivaviro, whose contracts expired. Amakhosi also terminated Mduduzi Mdantsane and Sabelo Radebe’s contracts ahead of the new season. They further released Njabulo Blom, who returned to his MLS parent club after his loan spell.
Bongani’s current contract with the Chiefs was valid until 2027 with an option to extend, but it has been cut short following contract termination.
The 27-year-old, Sam, who joined the Glamour Boys prior to last season, will seek to revive his career elsewhere. Sam’s signing raised eyebrows from the outset, particularly given his limited playing time in the six months leading up to his arrival at Chiefs.
While his last club appearance was in December 2023, he saw action in March with Bafana Bafana’s CHAN squad. This was during their first-leg qualifier against Egypt.
