Malawi’s U-17 girls’ team began their 2024 COSAFA Girls Under-17 Championship campaign with a 4-2 defeat to hosts South Africa in their opening Group B match.
South Africa dominated early proceedings, displaying hunger for goals from the outset. Despite creating multiple chances, they were initially thwarted by Malawi goalkeeper Esther Maulidi.
The breakthrough came in the 23rd minute when Leonay Kock found the back of the net, giving the hosts a deserved lead.
Malawi coach Linda Kasenda, fielding ten players from the squad that arrived earlier in the week, made an early tactical change.
Grace Khunga replaced Ethel Tambala in the 34th minute to shore up the defense. However, South Africa doubled their advantage shortly after.
A foul inside the box resulted in a penalty, and captain Katleho Malebana coolly converted in the 36th minute, sending the hosts into halftime with a 2-0 lead.
In the second half, Malawi introduced Jean Fyson and Asimenye Mwanyongo, replacing Enelesi Fabiano and Faluna Umali.
The changes sparked immediate results, as Mwanyongo scored just a minute after entering the field, narrowing the deficit to 2-1.
Despite Malawi’s renewed energy and efforts to find an equalizer, South Africa remained resolute in defense.
Kock then sealed the match with two quick goals to complete her hat-trick, extending South Africa’s lead to 4-1.
Fatima Mali managed a late consolation goal for Malawi in the 88th minute, but it was too little, too late.
Malawi will now focus on their second group-stage match against Madagascar on Saturday.
Only the group winners and the best runner-up will advance to the knockout stages, leaving Malawi with everything to play for in their next outing.
South Africa’s commanding performance has set the tone for the tournament, while Malawi will look to regroup and bounce back in their remaining matches.
