Athletes Unite Against Xenophobia in South Africa

In the wake of rising xenophobic violence in South Africa, athletes are stepping up to take a stand. As the country faces an increasing wave of attacks against foreign African communities, several prominent figures are mobilizing for the Laureus Foundation’s “Sport Against Xenophobia” campaign.

Among those leading the charge are Emmanuel Adebayor, Bryan Habana, and Lucas Radebe. The message has also been amplified through social media, where athletes and influencers are using their platforms to denounce xenophobia and promote peace.

In a significant move, SuperSport United, a Premier Soccer League (PSL) club, has chosen Togolese midfielder Womé Dové to carry their anti-xenophobia message. Dové posted the campaign on his Facebook page, calling for unity and tolerance in the face of these disturbing events.

In recent days, South Africa has been in turmoil, with at least seven fatalities and 307 arrests linked to xenophobic attacks. These incidents have primarily targeted foreign African communities, highlighting the urgent need for solidarity and awareness.

As these athletes continue to advocate for peace, their efforts remind us that sport can be a powerful tool in combating division and promoting social harmony.
