South Africa: Rulani Mokwena nears Orlando Pirates return as head coach talks progress
Negotiations between Rulani Mokwena and Orlando Pirates have reached an advanced stage, with the 37-year-old tactician on the verge of returning to the Soweto giants as head coach.
While key aspects of the agreement are reportedly settled, discussions are still ongoing regarding the composition of Mokwena’s preferred technical team.
Talks began nine days ago following the departure of Jose Riveiro, with Pirates moving swiftly to secure a new coach before the team returns for pre-season preparations next week.
The club is scheduled to begin medical testing shortly before embarking on a training tour in Spain in early July.
Mokwena, who previously served as assistant and caretaker coach at Pirates between 2017 and 2019, is said to be keen on bringing in staff he has previously worked with.
Among those he has approached is Michael Loftman, who is being considered for the assistant coach role.
Meanwhile, Mandla Ncikazi is expected to remain within the Pirates’ technical team, ensuring some continuity within the setup.
Sources close to the negotiations confirm that Mokwena’s return is no longer a question of intent, but rather of finalising the structure of his backroom team and aligning visions with the club hierarchy.
The delay in concluding the deal has largely revolved around these finer logistical details, including delegation of roles within the bench.
Mokwena’s coaching philosophy, which emphasises structured build-up play, high pressing, and youth development, is believed to resonate with the Pirates board as they seek long-term stability and competitiveness both domestically and in continental football.
His previous success at Mamelodi Sundowns and brief spell at Wydad AC have only strengthened his profile.
Despite the ongoing negotiations, Pirates are under mounting pressure to conclude the deal swiftly.
With pre-season drawing near, any further delay could disrupt the team’s early preparations for the 2024/25 campaign.
The Buccaneers are expected to finalise the agreement in the coming days, ideally before players report for duty next week.
Should all go according to plan, Mokwena will be officially unveiled before the squad departs for their Spanish pre-season tour, setting the stage for a new chapter at Orlando Pirates under familiar leadership.
