South Africa: Orlando Pirates clinch fourth straight MTN8 title

Orlando Pirates cemented their dominance in South African football by lifting the MTN8 trophy for the fourth consecutive year after a 3-0 extra-time victory over Stellenbosch FC at Mbombela Stadium in Mpumalanga on Saturday.

The final remained goalless through regular time despite both sides creating chances.

But once the match entered extra time, the Soweto giants seized control.

New signing Thsepang Moremi broke the deadlock in the 92nd minute with a clinical finish, sending the Pirates fans into raptures.

Stellenbosch, stunned by the opener, struggled to regain composure, and the Buccaneers quickly pressed home their advantage.

Tshegofatso Mabasa doubled the lead in the 103rd minute, before Moremi struck again seven minutes later, this time set up by Ozwin Apollis, to secure a commanding win.

The victory was especially significant for Moroccan coach Abdessalam Ouaddou, who took charge of the club in July 2025.

The former Marumo Gallants boss collected his first trophy with the Pirates, continuing an impressive start to life in Soweto.

Since his appointment, the team has recorded six wins, one draw and two defeats in nine matches.

For the club, the triumph further strengthens its legacy in the competition.

This 14th MTN8 title moves Orlando Pirates to within one of arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs, who top the all-time list with 15 trophies.

The Buccaneers are now well clear of Mamelodi Sundowns, who sit third with four titles.

The MTN8, contested by the top eight finishers from the previous Premier Soccer League season, remains one of the most prestigious tournaments in South African football.

For Pirates, the win not only extends their remarkable run in the competition but also sends a strong message about their ambitions for the season ahead.

Ouaddou praised his players’ resilience and composure under pressure, noting the importance of their response in extra time.

Winning my first title here with this club is special, he said. The players showed character, and our supporters deserve this joy.

The Buccaneers’ current dominance echoes some of the most successful eras in South African football history.

By clinching four consecutive crowns, Pirates have established a dynasty that rivals the glory years of their greatest rivals.

With another piece of silverware secured, Orlando Pirates now turn their focus to the league campaign, aiming to build on this momentum and challenge for further honours.

For now, though, their supremacy in the MTN8 remains undisputed.
