South Africa midfielder Teboho Mokoena ruled out of Eritrea clash

South Africa head coach Pitso Mosimane will be without key midfielder Teboho Mokoena when Bafana Bafana face Eritrea in their second 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Egypt.

Mokoena has been ruled out of the encounter after picking up an injury during South Africa’s opening qualifying fixture against Guinea.

The Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder played a key role in the 2-1 victory over Guinea but struggled towards the latter stages of the game, prompting concerns over his fitness ahead of the next fixture.

Mosimane has now confirmed that Mokoena will not recover in time for the clash with Eritrea, forcing the coach to consider his alternatives in midfield.

The absence of Mokoena represents a setback for Bafana Bafana, particularly after the midfielder featured in their opening victory and remains an important option in the centre of the pitch.

South Africa secured a winning start to their qualifying campaign by beating Guinea 2-1 and will be looking to maintain that momentum against Eritrea.

Mosimane had previously explained the decision to select a 30-man squad for the current international window, with the larger group designed to provide sufficient cover as the team navigates two competitive fixtures in a short period.

Mokoena’s injury could now create an opportunity for Bathusi Aubaas, who is part of the squad and could be considered to fill the void in midfield.

Aubaas will be hoping to take advantage of the opportunity should he be handed a starting role, while Mosimane will assess his options before deciding on the best combination for the Eritrea encounter.
