Former Kaizer Chiefs and South Africa midfielder Reneilwe ‘Yeye’ Letsholonyane has been confirmed as the new head coach of Botswana Premiership side Matebele FC.
The 41-year-old, who enjoyed a decorated playing career with both club and country, takes on his first major senior coaching role after steadily building his credentials on the touchline.
Letsholonyane’s move into management follows his recent role as assistant to Molefi Ntseki with the South African national team at the African Nations Championship.
Before that, he worked alongside Vela Khumalo during the COSAFA tournament, gaining valuable international experience in technical roles.
His coaching journey began at AmaZulu, where he was entrusted with guiding the club’s DStv Diski side.
That stint marked his formal transition into coaching and laid the foundation for his latest opportunity.
In addition to his practical experience, the former midfielder has completed his CAF A Licence, underlining his commitment to developing his career on the sidelines.
Matebele FC, who compete in Botswana’s top division, have entrusted Letsholonyane with the task of shaping their ambitions for the upcoming season.
His unveiling has been met with enthusiasm from supporters who view his appointment as both a bold and progressive move for the club.
Letsholonyane is best remembered for his commanding presence in Kaizer Chiefs’ midfield, where his intelligence, composure, and leadership earned him legendary status.
He also made significant contributions to Bafana Bafana, featuring in the 2010 FIFA World Cup on home soil and establishing himself as one of South Africa’s most consistent midfielders during his international career.
Now, as he transitions into a new chapter, expectations will be high for him to translate his experience on the pitch into results from the dugout.
His appointment also reflects a broader trend of African clubs turning to former internationals with strong playing pedigrees to bring fresh ideas and professional standards into their setups.
For Letsholonyane, Matebele represents a major step forward in his coaching journey, offering him the platform to implement his philosophy and prove himself as a head coach in a competitive league.
His unveiling has been widely celebrated, with fans and pundits alike eager to see how one of South Africa’s most respected former players adapts to life in charge of a senior team.
With his deep understanding of the game, technical education, and leadership background, Letsholonyane now faces the challenge of guiding Matebele to new heights in Botswana football.
