30,000 Mourners Attend Senzo Meyiwa’s Funeral at Moses Mabhida Stadium

A powerful wave of grief swept across South Africa as more than 30,000 people gathered at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban this Saturday to bid farewell to Senzo Meyiwa, the national team goalkeeper and captain who was tragically killed last Sunday.

The 27-year-old was shot at his home in Vosloorus, a township located about 20 km south of Johannesburg, in an incident that shocked the nation. His funeral was broadcast live on multiple television channels, drawing millions of viewers in mourning.

Meyiwa’s funeral brought together family members, government officials, and the entire South African football fraternity, with tributes pouring in from across the country and beyond. A period of official mourning was declared in the province in honor of the fallen sportsman.

On Friday, authorities charged one of Meyiwa’s alleged attackers, marking a key development in the ongoing investigation into the murder that has stirred national outrage and calls for justice.

Senzo Meyiwa’s legacy as a talented and dedicated player—both for Orlando Pirates and the Bafana Bafana national team—will remain etched in South African football history.
