South Africa is reportedly exploring a joint bid with Botswana to host the 2028 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), according to local media.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has yet to open the official bidding process for the tournament.

Meanwhile, reports suggest Morocco could once again be in the running to host the 2028 edition, which would mark the final AFCON under the current four-year cycle before it extends to 2032, according to AfricaSoccer.com.

Southern Africa last staged the tournament in 2013. Since then, the competition has moved across the continent: Central Africa (Equatorial Guinea 2015, Gabon 2017, Cameroon 2019), West Africa (Ivory Coast 2023), and North Africa (Egypt 2019, Morocco 2025). The 2027 edition is set for East Africa, with Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania as co-hosts.

Morocco has drawn widespread praise for its organization of the 2025 AFCON, ahead of Sunday’s final against Senegal at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.
