Hugo Broos unhappy with draw against Panama

Hugo Broos has expressed his frustration after South Africa conceded a preventable goal in their draw against Panama, despite their commanding performance at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

The Bafana Bafana were caught out in the first half while attempting to build from the back, a decision that proved costly. Under pressure deep in their own half, the South Africans lost possession, allowing Edgar Yoel Bárcenas to capitalise and fire past goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.

The goal came against the run of play and highlighted the risks of playing out from the back in dangerous areas—something Broos had specifically warned his players about.

South Africa, however, showed resilience and quality throughout the match. Their persistence paid off when Oswin Appollis found the equaliser, ensuring the hosts got something from a game in which they largely dominated proceedings.

Despite the setback, Broos was full of praise for his team’s overall display, insisting they were the better side across the 90 minutes.

“I think there was a very good team on the pitch—South African team played a very good game for 90 minutes,” Broos said after the match.

“I think we had eight or nine chances, we played good football, there was depth in our game, combinations were good, positioning was good. Everything was good except the goal we conceded.”

The Belgian tactician did not hide his disappointment over the nature of the goal, revealing he had instructed his players to avoid unnecessary risks when under pressure.

“I said during halftime to the players there’s nothing wrong with kicking the ball into the stands when you’re under pressure,” he explained.

“So, we tried there also to come out in combination but that was not the situation where we tried the combination and come out—kick the ball in stands, it’s over.”

Broos further warned that Panama could have punished them again in a similar situation, pointing to another moment where possession was cheaply lost.

“The second chance they had was also a little bit too easy, we lose the ball and they could’ve had a second goal. But if you see all the chances we created, it’s a pity we didn’t win it.”

While the result may feel like a missed opportunity, the performance offered encouraging signs for Bafana Bafana. However, Broos will be keen to address the defensive lapses as his side continues preparations for upcoming competitions.
