South Africa coach Hugo Broos explains Relebohile Mofokeng’s call up despite dip form
Head coach of the South Africa national team, Hugo Broos has explained his decision to include Orlando Pirates star Relebohile Mofokeng despite dip form.
The 20-year-old, who enjoyed an amazing campaign last term has yet to score for the Soweto giants after 10 appearances in the current campaign.
Despite his modest performance, the enterprising attacker has been included in the South Africa squad for the must-win clashes against Zimbabwe and Rwanda.
However, the Belgian gaffer has shed lights on his decision to included Mofokeng in his squad for the two crucial games this month.
“I think this is what happened with Rele and it’s not good for the player,” Broos said via SABC Sport. “At the certain moment you are only thinking about that, you can’t focus anymore on football.
“And that is what happened with Rele, but his qualities are still there, and I will not drop him like that,” the Belgian added.
The Bafana Bafana face an uphill task to secure qualification to the biggest soccer mundial to be staged in the USA, Canada and Mexico, following FIFA sanction.
South Africa are now second in Group C after being declared losers in their game against Lesotho back in March 2025 despite their 2-1 win.
Hugo Broos’ side were docked three goals and three goals for fielding an unqualified player, Teboho Mokoena despite being suspended due to yellow cards accumulation.
South Africa have their destiny in their own hands and must approach the final two games with all seriousness.
The Bafana Bafana will play host to Zimbabwe on October 10 in Johannesburg before traveling to Kigali for the final round of games, four days later.
Benin currently sit top in Group C with 14 points, while South Africa occupies second with similar points.
