Head coach of South Africa, Hugo Broos has explained why he excluded Mamelodi Sundowns players from recent squad.
Since taking charge of the Bafana Bafana in 2021, the Belgian coach Hugo Broos has leaned on Mamelodi Sundowns as the core club for Bafana Bafana.
But in recent call ups, the 73-year-old omitted players plying their trade for Sundowns, who recently finished second in the CAF Champions League.
Explaining decision to exclude Sundowns players for the upcoming international break, Broos said, “I know that the presence of Sundowns players in the national team has always been important. Why? Because these are players with extensive experience at the highest level. They have helped us a lot in the past, but as you know, I’m not a coach who only looks at the top teams when selecting players… I always consider other clubs as well.
Some Sundowns players are already over 30, so we must think about the future. We will play without Sundowns players against Tanzania and Mozambique. Hopefully, we can find other players from different clubs, because having too many players from one team is not ideal. That’s why I’m very interested to see what players from other teams can do in these friendlies,” Broos stated.
