South Africa coach Hugo Broos remained upbeat despite his outfit falling short to Panama in an international friendly match on Tuesday.

The Bafana Bafana succumbed to a 2-1 defeat in a highly-competitive clash, held at the Cape Town Stadium. Broos’ side were punished for their wastefulness in front of goal, having created numerous scoring opportunities.

Forward Lyle Foster came close on several occasions but was unable to convert, while returning striker Bongokuhle Hlongwane also missed clear-cut chances that could have changed the outcome.

Defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi provided a moment of quality with a stunning strike for South Africa, but goals from Yoel Bárcenas and Jiovany Ramos ensured Panama left Cape Town with the victory.

Despite the setback, the Belgian tactician insists the performance offered valuable lessons ahead of future challenges.

“The first half was good, three very open chances and we didn’t score, and in such a game that can be crucial,” he explained. “In the second half we were overpowered by Panama—they had more power and speed—and we couldn’t play our game.”

Despite the setback, the experienced coach emphasized the importance of the fixture as part of Bafana’s broader development process, particularly in testing themselves against different styles of football from across the globe.

“I said before these two games that it would be a good test. We know what international football is and what football is from other continents,” Broos said. “I’m very happy we played Panama, and we saw what we didn’t do to win on Friday—and what Panama did today.”

The Belgian tactician also highlighted the significance of squad rotation and experimentation, noting that the friendlies were an opportunity to evaluate players and expand his options ahead of future competitions.

“That was the goal of these games—to see some players and to try possible changes in positions,” he said. “It was interesting for me.”

While the defeat may have been disappointing, Broos stressed that the insights gained from the matches were invaluable.

“It will not make my choices easier, but I saw things I didn’t know before the game—and that is very important,” he concluded.

For South Africa national football team, the focus now shifts to refining their finishing and building on the positives as Broos continues to shape a squad capable of competing on the international stage.
