Head coach of South Africa Hugo Broos is on the verge of retiring from active coaching after almost 40-years.
The 73-year-old Belgian tactician started his coaching career in 1988 with RWD Molenbeek and has since had an illustrious career, leading top clubs including Trabzonspor, Club Brugge, Genk, Anderlecht and others.
At the international level, Broos previously managed the Cameroon national team before taking over the South African job.
The experienced tactician left an indelible mark at Cameroon after just a year, reaching the finals of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations with the Indomitable Lions.
In the last AFCON tournament held in Ivory Coast, Broos led the Bafana Bafana to a third place finish after defeating DR Congo on penalties.
After almost 40-years coaching experience, the 73-year-old has hinted about his retirement probably after 2026 World Cup.
“I’ve been coaching for nearly 40 years, and I’m 73. There always comes a time when you have to stop. I don’t want to die on the bench,” Broos stated.
South Africa are in pole position to secure qualification to the biggest soccer mundial tournament to be staged in the USA.
Hugo Broos took charge of Bafana Bafana in May 2021 and has since overseen the team in 42 matches.
