South Africa claim historic first FIFA U-17 World Cup victory with 3-1 win over Bolivia

South Africa’s U-17 team, Amajimbos, secured their first-ever win at the FIFA U-17 World Cup, defeating Bolivia 3-1 in their Group A opener in Qatar on Sunday.

Goals from Emile Witbooi, Neo Bohloko and Shaun Els sealed a memorable victory for Vela Khumalo’s side, who played with 10 men for nearly an hour after Sive Pama’s first-half red card.

The result marks a historic moment for South African youth football, ending a long wait for a World Cup triumph at this level.

Amajimbos started brightly but were forced to dig deep after Pama’s dismissal in the 36th minute for a reckless challenge on Jario Saldias.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, South Africa struck first just two minutes later when Witbooi capitalised on a rebound to slot home after hitting the post with his initial effort.

The young South Africans doubled their advantage early in the second half. Substitute Alwande Booysen made an instant impact, delivering a precise cross that found Neo Bohloko unmarked at the back post for a simple finish.

Bolivia pulled one back in the 72nd minute through Jesús Maraude, who converted a penalty after a VAR review deemed Lebohang Dhlamini’s tackle inside the box illegal.

However, South Africa ensured there would be no comeback. In stoppage time, Booysen provided another assist, floating a long ball that found substitute Shaun Els unmarked to score Amajimbos’ third and final goal.

Head coach Vela Khumalo praised his side’s resilience and tactical discipline after the game, describing the win as “a proud moment for South African football.”

Amajimbos will now face hosts Qatar in their second group match on Thursday, aiming to secure qualification for the knockout stage.
