Benni McCarthy Eyes Future Coaching Role at Orlando Pirates
South African football legend Benni McCarthy has hinted at the possibility of one day returning to coach Orlando Pirates, following his completion of a UEFA coaching course. The former Bafana Bafana record goalscorer is eager to take on a managerial role and feels well-prepared for the challenge.
“It’s just an opportunity for me to get trained. I’ve learned a lot of different things from coaches who have played at the highest level and have also coached at the highest level,” McCarthy explained. With his new qualifications, McCarthy is ready for a potential return to South Africa and believes he could lead a team to success, whether at Pirates or another top club in the country.
“If my destination is to take me back to South Africa, I’m ready. I’m equipped for that. I can take over and independently take a team to become one either at Pirates or in Cape Town,” he added, showing his confidence in his coaching abilities.
Reflecting on his journey from player to potential manager, McCarthy emphasized the importance of continuous learning. “Like a footballer, you receive training to improve yourself, and like a manager, you have to study to become better. You have to learn to know the opponent. You have to learn to understand the players, what advantages they have. Having played a lot under several coaches, as a player, I know how to treat players.”
McCarthy’s passion for the game and his wealth of experience, both as a player and now as a coach-in-training, positions him as a strong candidate for a managerial role in the future. With aspirations to lead a team like Orlando Pirates, McCarthy is eager to apply his knowledge and become as successful in coaching as he was during his playing career.
