Despite initial beliefs of retirement, Zimbabwean striker Benjamin Mwaruwari, popularly known as Benjani, has made a comeback by signing a new contract with SuperSport United, a South African first division club. The 34-year-old forward had been without a club since his last stint with Portsmouth in England.
Benjani’s new contract with SuperSport United spans one year, marking a return to the championship where he began his professional career with Jomo Cosmos before venturing to Europe, primarily in the English football scene. During his time in England, Mwaruwari played for clubs like Manchester City, Blackburn, and Portsmouth.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the move, Benjani shared, “I had some great years in English football. I’m delighted to have scored so many goals there against big teams like Manchester United with rival City. Now I’m here, and I hope to score as much again with SuperSport. I started in this country with Jomo Cosmos. I want to succeed with my new club.” Benjani’s return to South African football brings him back to his roots, and he is eager to make a positive impact with SuperSport United.
