Free State Stars Edge Closer to Survival After Crucial Victory Over Ajax Cape Town
Free State Stars are making significant strides in their battle to avoid relegation in South Africa’s Premier Soccer League (PSL). The club secured a crucial 1-0 win over Ajax Cape Town on Tuesday, which has propelled them five points clear of the relegation zone. The victory, achieved on the 26th matchday of the season, was courtesy of a 19th-minute goal from Burkinabe defender Robert Sankara.
This marks Free State Stars’ second win in less than four days, following their 3-2 triumph over Polokwane on Saturday. In that match, Togolese forward Abraw Calmadine played a pivotal role, scoring a brace to help his team secure all three points. Calmadine’s performance on Tuesday was also key, as he played the full match and caused constant headaches for the Ajax defense.
With 28 points now in hand, Free State Stars have a comfortable cushion over Amazulu, who sit in 15th place with 23 points. The team’s improved form has given them hope of maintaining their top-flight status, but they will need to continue picking up points in their remaining fixtures.
Meanwhile, Kaizer Chiefs continue to dominate the PSL, sitting atop the league with 60 points, a commanding 13-point lead over second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns. For Free State Stars, the fight for survival will be far from over, but their recent performances have injected optimism into their relegation battle.
