Soumaila Coulibaly joins Watford on loan from Strasbourg

Watford have signed Strasbourg defender Soumaila Coulibaly on a season-long loan, with an option to make the move permanent at the end of the campaign.

The 22-year-old joins the EFL Championship side after finding his opportunities limited at the Ligue 1 club following Strasbourg’s summer recruitment.

Coulibaly had hoped to assess his options after returning to Alsace this summer, having spent the previous two seasons away from the club on loan at Brest.

However, increased competition for places in Strasbourg’s defence left the Frenchman with little prospect of regular first-team football.

Limited opportunities at Strasbourg

Strasbourg’s decision to allow another defender, Andrew Omobamidele, to leave on loan further highlighted the competition within the squad.

The Republic of Ireland international had been a regular for Strasbourg last season and featured in both of their Ligue 1 matches at the start of the current campaign.

Omobamidele also captained the side against Lens last weekend before completing a loan move to Belgian club Anderlecht.

Coulibaly has now followed him out of Strasbourg, although his move differs significantly from Omobamidele’s.

Option to make move permanent

Unlike Omobamidele’s temporary departure, Watford’s agreement for Coulibaly includes an option to sign the defender permanently at the end of the season.

The move gives Coulibaly the opportunity to establish himself in English football and compete for regular game time in the Championship.

For the defender, the season at Watford could prove decisive as he looks to secure a long-term future following two years away from Strasbourg on loan at Brest.

Watford will meanwhile hope the 22-year-old’s experience in French football can strengthen their defensive options as they pursue their ambitions in the Championship.
