Souleymane Faye has set his sights on breaking into Senegal’s senior national team as he continues to establish himself in European football with Sporting CP.

The 23-year-old winger, who was part of Senegal’s successful U20 generation in 2023, is now taking important steps in his career following his move to Portugal.

Having joined Sporting in January from Granada in Spain’s second division, Faye is gradually finding his place within the squad while gaining valuable experience, including appearances in the Champions League.

Speaking in an interview with L’Observateur, Faye reflected on the challenges he faced after arriving at his new club, where competition for places initially limited his opportunities.

“The start was a bit difficult because I found the team already established. So it was a bit complicated to get a place in the squad. But now, I’m gradually getting more playing time.”

Despite this progress, the Senegalese winger admitted he is not fully satisfied with his current level of involvement and believes he has more to offer if given consistent minutes on the pitch.

“I can’t say I’m satisfied, as long as I’m not playing much. I know I can do better if I get more minutes.”

Faye also described his first experiences in Europe’s top club competition as a significant milestone in his development, highlighting the importance of representing a club competing at that level.

“It was a dream. I was lucky enough to join a club that plays in the Champions League. I’ve already played two matches. It’s a source of pride.”

Having progressed through all of Senegal’s youth national teams, the winger made clear that his next objective is to secure a place in the senior squad.

With competition strong among established players, he acknowledged that consistent performances at club level will be key to achieving that goal.

“I’ve already been through all the selections. The next step is the senior Senegal team, which many great players want to join.

So, I have to prove myself. In fact, that remains one of my goals. I’m working hard to join the senior Senegal national team.”

Aware of the demands required to earn a call-up, Faye stressed the importance of proving his worth when opportunities arise.

“You have to perform, prove why you deserve to be there. Then, if they call you up, it’s up to you to sell yourself.”

As he continues to adapt to life at Sporting and build his presence on the European stage, Faye remains focused on translating his potential into consistent performances, with the ambition of representing Senegal at the highest level firmly in his sights.
