Support Grows for Souleymane Diawara’s Release Amid Lengthy Detention
Souleymane Diawara, former Senegalese international and ex-Marseille defender, has been in custody since April 10, 2015, along with his brother Adama Diawara, and frustration is mounting across France and beyond—especially in Le Havre, where his professional journey began.
According to Top Normandie.com, an online petition demanding Diawara’s release has already gathered 10,000 signatures on Facebook, and calls are growing for broader African support. In addition, a rally is scheduled for Friday, May 22, at 6 p.m., at the Jules-Deschaseaux stadium in Le Havre, to show solidarity.
Case Background:
The case centers on a 2013 transaction in which Diawara bought a Porsche Cayenne for €49,800 in cash. The car later turned out to be stolen. In an attempt to recover the money, Adama Diawara and four other men reportedly confronted the seller—a former soldier—at his home in Reillanne (Alpes-de-Haute-Provence) on March 19. Souleymane is accused of being behind the plan, and is now charged with extortion and attempted extortion.
⚖️ Legal Standpoint:
Diawara’s lawyer, famed defense attorney Éric Dupond-Moretti, insists the footballer is wrongfully jailed, stating:
“This situation is unacceptable. He has no place in prison. He is employed and has guarantees of representation.”
Despite a request for provisional release being denied by the Aix-en-Provence Court of Appeal in April, Dupond-Moretti vows to submit a new release appeal.
