Rigobert Song, the head coach of Cameroon, revealed that the defeat against Nigeria in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) was attributed to the players’ lack of experience, emphasizing that the loss against the Super Eagles was a tough blow for everyone.
Song, speaking on beIN Sports, stated, “Perhaps we lacked some maturity in the players, relying more on the youth, which didn’t allow them to be fully prepared for this match.”
He added, “Nigeria is a very good opponent, a great team, and we know their players individually.
They didn’t dominate us entirely, but they did what was necessary, and that’s where experience comes into play.”
Regarding the absence of André Onana, Song responded, “This is a tactical choice, and I am the one making the decisions because I have 27 players, and these are simply tactical choices.”
On his future, he concluded, “I think I will have enough time for rest and to review everything that happened.”
Since the expansion of the Africa Cup of Nations to 24 teams, the Lions have exited the tournament in the Round of 16 for the second time after the 2019 edition, finishing third in the last championship.
