Somalia to host Algeria in Algiers for World Cup Qualifier

Algeria’s World Cup qualifier against Somalia will be staged on Algerian soil after an agreement between the two federations, with the Ocean Stars set to host the fixture away from home.

The match, scheduled for the ninth round of the 2026 qualifiers, had initially been listed as Somalia’s home game.

However, without a fixed venue of their own, Somalia have accepted Algeria’s offer to play the encounter in North Africa.

The fixture carries huge significance for the Fennecs. Sitting top of Group G with 19 points, Algeria require only three more to confirm their place at the 2026 World Cup, regardless of the outcomes elsewhere in the group.

Securing qualification on familiar ground is seen as a major advantage for Djamel Belmadi’s side as they look to book their spot with a match to spare.

According to reliable sources, the decision has already been finalised, though the specific city and stadium have not yet been chosen.

Reports indicate that the match is unlikely to take place in Tizi-Ouzou, unless the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) opts to move the Algeria–Uganda fixture to another location.

Somalia are obliged to host twice during the October FIFA window, meaning both games will need to be staged in the same venue.

Somalia’s difficulties in securing a permanent home ground have been a recurring feature of their qualifying campaign.

The Ocean Stars have had to adopt a different host country for each of their fixtures so far, a situation that has disrupted their preparations and left them without a consistent base.

This arrangement with Algeria ensures logistical clarity for the upcoming window, though it effectively hands their opponents home advantage.

For Algeria, the agreement presents a clear opportunity. With form and momentum already on their side, the chance to play in front of home support could prove decisive in wrapping up qualification early.

Victory would take their points tally to 22 and put them beyond the reach of their nearest challengers, guaranteeing their participation at the tournament in North America.

The FAF is expected to announce the final venue in the coming weeks. Considerations will centre on stadium availability, capacity, and the need to accommodate two Somalia “home” matches within the same international break.

While the Ocean Stars face the daunting task of trying to derail Algeria’s qualifying push in hostile surroundings, the fixture will nonetheless be crucial for both sides.

For Somalia, it represents another step in their ongoing battle to adapt to challenging circumstances, while for Algeria it offers the chance to secure their World Cup return in front of their own fans.

As the October window approaches, all eyes will be on the FAF’s decision over which Algerian city will host the match, a choice that could shape the atmosphere of a potentially historic night for the Fennecs.
