Sohaib Naïr: Saint-Étienne eye move for €2m Guingamp defender

Algeria-France centre-back Sohaib Naïr of Guingamp is being linked with a summer switch to Ligue 2 rivals Saint-Étienne, with the 24-year-old’s future uncertain amid talk he could be available without a long-term deal in Brittany.

The Saint-Denis-born defender, valued at €2.00m on Transfermarkt, is the subject of fresh speculation after French reports on 21 June highlighted ASSE’s interest. The probability of a move remains unclear, with the transfer listed as “?” in terms of likelihood and no formal agreement reported.

Naïr, who wears number 18 for Guingamp, has emerged as a physically imposing option at 1.86m in the heart of defence and is predominantly right-footed. Comfortable as a central defender, he has built his reputation in Ligue 2, where both Guingamp and Saint-Étienne are seeking to strengthen ahead of the new campaign.

Details of Naïr’s contract situation have not been made public, with no expiry date recorded. That has fuelled suggestions he could become a free agent if talks over his future stall, potentially allowing Saint-Étienne to move for the dual-nationality defender without a major transfer fee despite his €2.00m market valuation.

Born on 23 April 2002, Naïr has represented both Algeria and France at youth level in eligibility terms and has developed entirely within the French system, currently listed with EA Guingamp as his national-team affiliation on Transfermarkt. Recent Ligue 2 appearances – including Guingamp’s latest outing against second-tier opposition this spring, where he featured in a tight scoreline and delivered a solid defensive display – have helped maintain interest in his progress.

If Saint-Étienne do firm up their interest, a move to a historically significant French club could offer Naïr a platform to enhance his reputation, test himself under greater pressure and potentially position himself for a step up to the top flight in the coming seasons.
