Sofyan Amrabat is set to have arthroscopic surgery on his knee in the Netherlands following the end of his Africa Cup of Nations duties with Morocco.

The Real Betis midfielder played through pain during the tournament, as the medical staff and coaches opted to use him despite the injury not having fully healed.

Throughout AFCON, Amrabat continued to feel discomfort in his knee but pushed on to help the Atlas Lions in their bid for the continental title. His commitment on the pitch contrasted with the growing need for a definitive medical solution once Morocco’s campaign concluded.

According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Amrabat will now travel to the Netherlands for a minimally invasive procedure, after which he will begin a tailored rehabilitation program. The plan is for him to return to Spain and start his recovery phase with Betis as soon as his condition allows, with the exact timeline dependent on how his knee responds post-operation.

The surgery aims to finally resolve an issue that has been lingering for weeks and to ensure the 29-year-old can come back at full strength for both club and country.

Betis and Moroccan fans will be hoping the operation goes smoothly and that Amrabat can quickly regain the form and physical intensity that make him one of the team’s key midfield anchors.
