Sofiane Boufal joins Libyan club Al Ittihad after leaving Le Havre AC

Morocco international Sofiane Boufal has officially joined Al Ittihad in Libya, completing a move intended to revive his career after his departure from Le Havre AC.

The transfer, first reported exclusively by Africafoot, was confirmed by Al Ittihad on Monday. Boufal had been without a club since leaving Le Havre and will now begin a fresh chapter in a new league.

The 32-year-old attacking midfielder previously represented Lille, Celta Vigo and Southampton during a career spent largely in European football. He joined Le Havre AC from Belgian club Union Saint-Gilloise, but his time with the Normandy side was brief.

Boufal announced his departure from Le Havre in May last year, making him available to pursue another opportunity. His move to Al Ittihad takes him outside Europe for the first time in this latest stage of his career.

Al Ittihad expect creativity from Boufal

Al Ittihad are relying on Boufal’s experience at the highest level and his years in European football to strengthen their attacking options. The Libyan club hope his creativity and technical ability will add greater dynamism to their forward play.

For Boufal, the move offers the opportunity to secure regular playing time and find a degree of stability after several spells with different clubs in recent years. He now has the chance to continue his career in Libya while taking on a new role with Al Ittihad.

The club placed considerable emphasis on the announcement of his arrival, publishing a presentation video on its official social media accounts. Boufal was given an enthusiastic welcome in the video, with Al Ittihad accompanying the presentation with the message: “A great star wears the shirt of history.”

The tone of the announcement underlined the importance Al Ittihad attach to the signing. The club will now look to the former Atlas Lion to produce his talent in its colours.
