SOCHI 2014 OLYMPIC GAMES: THE IOC FORMALLY PROHIBITS THE WEARING OF BLACK ARMBANDS

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has issued a warning to the Norwegian Olympic Committee regarding the wearing of black armbands by Norwegian cross-country skiers during the skiathlon event at the 2014 Olympics in Sochi. The IOC stated that wearing black armbands in competition to commemorate the memory of a deceased loved one is not allowed. This decision came after members of the Norwegian team, including future Olympic champion Marit Bjoergen, wore black armbands in memory of the brother of their teammate Astrid Jacobsen, who had passed away suddenly.

The IOC clarified that while they understand the desire to honor the memory of deceased individuals, they believe that competitions themselves are not the appropriate venue for such commemoration. They expressed willingness to assist with alternative forms of commemoration but emphasized that it is not appropriate to wear distinctive signs or armbands during competitions.

Despite the athletes’ intentions, the IOC maintained its stance, citing the need for adherence to established rules and protocols. The issue sparked debate over the balance between personal expression and adherence to Olympic regulations.
