Slot claims he and Mohamed Salah ‘want the best’ for Liverpool amid tensions
Arne Slot has moved to calm tensions at Liverpool FC, insisting that both he and Mohamed Salah remain united in their ambition for the club despite increasing scrutiny around performances and dressing-room dynamics.
The Dutchman spoke ahead of the final Premier League fixture against Brentford FC, a match carrying added significance after a 4-2 defeat to Aston Villa FC deepened concerns over Liverpool’s inconsistent campaign and uncertain Champions League prospects.
With emotions expected at Anfield as Salah and Andy Robertson prepare for possible farewells, the season finale has become a moment of reflection as much as competition.
Liverpool’s season has been defined by inconsistency, with injuries, dropped points in key fixtures and a failure to maintain sustained pressure in the title race.
What was expected to be a smooth transition under Slot has instead become a testing campaign that now hinges on the final day for European qualification clarity.
Slot and Salah alignment over Liverpool future
Asked about Mohamed Salah’s recent remarks which appeared to suggest frustration with the team’s direction under his management, Slot stressed unity within the camp and rejected the idea of division between them. He also pointed to a strong week of training as evidence that the squad remains focused despite external noise.
He said: “I don’t know if it had an impact on the group. What I have seen is the team have trained really well this week, and we hope to continue really well in the upcoming two days so we are really prepared.”
“I think Mo and I have the same interest – we want the best for this club. We want the club to be as successful as possible. We were both part of giving the fans their first league title in five years – but we are also aware of this season.”
He added that his focus remains firmly on securing a strong finish that can serve as a foundation for next season.
Brentford clash and selection uncertainty
Slot refused to confirm whether Mohamed Salah will feature in the final game, but hinted that the forward could still play a part as Liverpool FC prepare for an emotional afternoon at Anfield.
“A lot of ifs but we know what we need Sunday. I think we would like to give our fans a nice way to end the season, because too many disappointments for us and the club and the fans and staff and players. We want to end with a win. Brentford play for something important as well. We want to be in the best possible place.”
Sunday’s fixture is also expected to carry a strong emotional undertone at Anfield, with supporters preparing to bid farewell to key figures and reflect on a season that promised much but delivered mixed outcomes. The club’s hierarchy is also expected to assess the broader direction once the campaign concludes.
Squad response to speculation
Questions also turned to dressing-room morale amid calls from sections of supporters for Slot’s departure, but the Dutchman insisted there had been no visible change in attitude.
“Social media came when I was older, so I don’t know what it means if you like a post or not. What I know in my world is to see how they train, I have not seen anything different. We had a good week, and it is never easy after a result like Villa. The boys trained well and I expect that.”
This leaves Liverpool FC heading into the final day under scrutiny but still with the chance to end a turbulent campaign on a positive note in front of home supporters.
Slot insists final focus remains performance and stability, with internal alignment seen as crucial to shaping Liverpool’s response heading into next season.
