Brighton striker Danny Welbeck has expressed excitement at receiving a phone call from Sir Alex Ferguson after his crucial goal against Newcastle United in the FA Cup.
The 34-year-old, who has Ghanaian heritage, has been enjoying a resurgence this season, scoring seven Premier League goals—his highest tally in a single campaign since joining the Seagulls.
His performances under manager Fabian Hurzeler have been a key factor in Brighton’s strong cup run, and his late winner against Newcastle was a moment that stood out to Ferguson.
“(Sir Alex Ferguson) actually phoned me after the Newcastle goal,” Welbeck told Football Focus. “He talked about the goal and the performance. He was buzzing.”
Welbeck, who rose through the ranks at Manchester United under Ferguson, still values the legendary manager’s influence.
“To have that sort of connection—he is a manager who is always looking out for his players, always wants the best for them, and still to this day is in contact.”
Reflecting on his career, Welbeck credited both Ferguson and Arsène Wenger for shaping his development.
“Sir Alex Ferguson got success in his own way, Arsène Wenger had success in his way. There are different ways to reach success. Both managers played a huge part in my life, not just my career.”
With Brighton chasing their first-ever FA Cup triumph, Welbeck remains determined to make history.
“I’ve had some really special times with the FA Cup. It has been a real highlight of my career, and those are memories that stay with you forever. You want to feel those special moments again.”
