Sipho Mbule named in Iraqi Stars League Team of the Week after Zakho victory
Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Sipho Mbule has been selected for the Iraqi Stars League Team of the Week after helping Zakho SC to a 2-1 win over Al Mosul SC.
The 28-year-old joined Zakho before the start of the new season, following his release by Orlando Pirates. The South African club decided not to exercise the option of extending his contract for another year.
Mbule has played in all seven of Zakho’s league matches this season, recording one goal and one assist. His contribution in the victory over Al Mosul has now been recognised with a place in the league’s best XI.
The result also ended Zakho’s five-match winless run. The club moved up to ninth in the standings with nine points from seven games.
Mbule began his career in the SuperSport United academy before moving to Sekhukhune United. He later joined Orlando Pirates, where he was part of the side that won the first Betway Premiership title in 14 years, as well as the MTN8 and the Carling Knockout Cup.
He made 23 appearances during his only season with the Buccaneers. Most of those outings came in the first half of the campaign, a period in which his form also earned him a recall to the Bafana Bafana squad.
However, Mbule found it difficult to maintain the same level of form and playing time after the midway point of the season. Orlando Pirates subsequently confirmed that he would leave the club.
