Sipho Mbule explains why he chose Orlando Pirates over Kaizer Chiefs
Sipho Mbule says he chose Orlando Pirates over several other options, including Kaizer Chiefs, after leaving Mamelodi Sundowns at the end of the 2024-25 season.
The midfielder became a free agent after Sundowns decided not to renew his contract, following a spell on loan at Sekhukhune United during the previous campaign.
Mbule ultimately joined Pirates, where he was given an opportunity to revive his career.
“Firstly, my contract with Sundowns ended,” Mbule said during SuperSport TV’s GIANTS series.
“There were other teams that wanted to sign me. Even Chiefs approached me.
“The people and coaches, and coach Rulani [Mokwena], told me the best team is Pirates. I think there was an opportunity for me to make a comeback.
“When they signed me, they showed me, ‘We believe in this boy’. So the least that you have to do is work as hard as you can and show them why they signed you.”
Mbule spent just one season at Pirates, making 21 appearances, with most of his opportunities coming during the early stages of the campaign.
Despite his eventual departure, Pirates assistant coach Mandla Ncikazi remains a big admirer of the midfielder’s ability.
“Mbule is in the top five talented players that I’ve worked with throughout my life as a coach,” Ncikazi said.
However, Ncikazi believes Mbule needs greater discipline and guidance to fulfil his potential.
“He needs guidance. Talent alone does not make you succeed,” he added.
“At our club, there are certain standards that you must meet to be eligible for selection – in terms of weight and the minutes that you have gathered throughout the week.
“There is a breathalyser almost every day.”
