After suffering a crushing 5-0 defeat in the first leg, Simon Deli’s Club Brugge traveled to Paris last Wednesday hoping to stage a comeback against PSG. However, things didn’t go as planned. The Belgian side fell behind early in the 21st minute, and despite creating chances, they were unable to overturn the deficit.
The best opportunity came in the 76th minute when Senegalese striker Mbaye Diagne was awarded a penalty that could have brought Club Brugge back into the game. Unfortunately, Diagne missed, and the Belgian team left France with another defeat.
In the aftermath, Diagne faced criticism for taking the spot-kick. His teammate Simon Deli quickly came to his defense: “He should have let the designated penalty taker take it, but he’s a striker. You know them—they always want to score. He made a courageous decision, but oh well. It didn’t go in, bad luck! It’s over now, we have to move on,” Deli said.
Diagne also issued apology messages to his teammates and fans, helping to calm tensions and put the incident behind the squad. Despite the disappointment, Club Brugge must now refocus as they continue their campaign in the Champions League group stage.
