FC Nantes secured a decisive 3-1 victory against Montpellier in Ligue 1 on Saturday, August 31, with standout performances from African internationals Moses Simon and Moustapha Mohamed. The Canaries’ win, part of the third matchday of the 2024-2025 Ligue 1 season, marked an important moment as they climbed to second place in the standings with seven points.

The match, held at the Stade de la Mosson, began with intensity from both sides, but it was Montpellier who struck first.

Despite this early setback, Nantes quickly regained their footing, and by the time the first half was nearing its end, both teams had found the back of the net, leaving the score level at 1-1.

In the crucial moments before halftime, Nantes found themselves awarded a penalty.

Nigerian winger Moses Simon stepped up to the spot, demonstrating his composure and clinical precision.

Simon’s strike in the 47th minute put Nantes ahead 2-1, a vital goal that shifted momentum firmly in favor of the visitors.

His penalty was expertly taken, showcasing the 29-year-old’s skill and confidence, and it marked his second goal of the season in just three matches.

Simon’s contributions to the team have been significant so far this season, and his ability to make an impact at key moments has given Nantes a much-needed edge in their pursuit of success in Ligue 1.

The goal also solidified Simon’s place as one of the team’s most reliable attacking outlets, as he continues to impress under the guidance of coach Antoine Kombouaré.

The second half saw Nantes maintaining their control, with the home side struggling to break through their well-organized defense.

As the clock ticked toward the final whistle, Egyptian forward Moustapha Mohamed put the result beyond doubt with a goal in the 88th minute.

Known for his sharp offensive instincts, Mohamed capitalized on a well-timed opportunity, slotting the ball into the net to make it 3-1 and seal the victory for Nantes.

Mohamed’s goal marked his first of the season and was a fitting reward for his hard work throughout the match.

His presence up front has added another dimension to Nantes’ attack, and his ability to find the back of the net under pressure has proven invaluable.

His late strike not only secured all three points for Nantes but also highlighted the strength of their attacking duo, with both Simon and Mohamed making decisive contributions.

The victory moves FC Nantes up to second place in the Ligue 1 standings, with seven points from their opening three matches.

Their performance against Montpellier underscores the team’s ambition this season, as they aim to compete at the top end of the table.

Under Kombouaré’s leadership, the Canaries have developed a solid blend of experience and youthful energy, with players like Simon and Mohamed leading the charge.

Nantes will now look to build on this early-season momentum as they continue their campaign, with hopes of maintaining their strong form and challenging for a spot in European competition.

For now, the team can take pride in a well-earned victory, propelled by the talents of two of Africa’s finest footballers.
