Simon Adingra pushing for Sunderland exit as Ajax talks advance

Ajax Amsterdam are in advanced negotiations with Sunderland over a deal for Ivory Coast winger Simon Adingra, with the 24-year-old keen to leave the English club this summer.

Adingra is under contract at Sunderland until 2030, but has been pushing for a move after beginning the season in the Championship following a foot injury. Ajax have now opened discussions with Sunderland as they explore a way to bring the international forward to Amsterdam.

The nature of the proposed deal has not yet been settled. Ajax could seek a permanent transfer for Adingra, although the clubs may also consider another loan arrangement.

Sunderland signed Adingra from Brighton & Hove Albion for €25m in July 2025. The Ivorian subsequently spent six successful months on loan at AS Monaco, where he made a strong impression in Ligue 1.

He scored three goals and supplied three assists in 14 appearances for the Monaco side, underlining the attacking threat that has made him a target for Ajax. His performances during that spell helped reinforce his reputation after a difficult start to the campaign in England.

Adingra is currently valued at about €22m. His experience extends beyond his time with Sunderland, Brighton & Hove Albion and AS Monaco, having also made a notable impact in both the Premier League and Belgian football.

The winger’s international status adds to his appeal. Adingra is an Ivory Coast international and an African champion, while his spells in major European competitions have given him experience at a high level.

Ajax must now determine whether they can complete negotiations with Sunderland and agree the structure of the transfer. A straightforward permanent move remains possible, but a further loan could provide an alternative if the clubs are unable to finalise a full transfer this summer.

For Sunderland, the discussions come less than a year after Adingra arrived from Brighton & Hove Albion in a deal worth €25m. The player’s long-term contract means the English club remain in a strong position in negotiations, despite his desire to move on.

For Ajax Amsterdam, the priority is to secure an attacking player with proven experience in the Premier League, Ligue 1 and Belgium. Adingra’s productive loan spell at AS Monaco, where his three goals and three assists came in 14 appearances, is central to the interest in him.

The talks are now at an advanced stage, but an agreement has yet to be reached. The final outcome is expected to depend on whether Ajax and Sunderland settle on a permanent transfer or a new loan for the Ivory Coast winger.
