Simba SC have been crowned champions of the Muungano Cup after edging fierce rivals Young Africans SC 1-0 in a tense final decided in extra time at the New Amaan Complex on Wednesday.

The victory delivered Steve Barker his first trophy since taking charge of the Tanzanian giants, marking a strong start to his spell in charge as he continues to make an impact in his first coaching role outside South Africa.

The Kariakoo Derby lived up to expectations, with both sides locked in a tightly contested battle before Simba eventually broke the deadlock in extra time to seal a hard-fought win and lift the silverware.

Barker’s success extends beyond the cup triumph, with the 58-year-old also earning back-to-back Coach of the Month awards in February and March, further highlighting his growing influence at the club.

Attention now shifts quickly back to league action, where Simba will once again face Young Africans on Sunday, April 3, in a crucial fixture that could shape the title race.

Yanga currently sit top of the table, with Simba second and five points adrift.

A win for Barker’s side would narrow the gap and inject fresh momentum into their pursuit of the championship.
