Sierra Leonean forward Abu Kamara returns to Championship side Portsmouth

Portsmouth have completed the signing of Sierra Leonean forward Abu Bakarr Kamara from Championship side Hull City, with the 23-year-old returning to Fratton Park on a three-year contract.

The transfer, which was announced by Portsmouth, is subject to an undisclosed fee and represents the club’s seventh signing of the summer as manager John Mousinho continues to strengthen his squad.

Kamara is no stranger to Portsmouth, having previously enjoyed a successful loan spell with the club during the 2023/24 season. The forward played an important role as Pompey secured the League One title and earned promotion.

During his season with Portsmouth, Kamara made 52 appearances across all competitions, scoring 10 goals and providing 11 assists. One of his standout performances came in the victory over Shrewsbury Town, where he scored twice.

His return to Portsmouth has been welcomed by Mousinho, who revealed that the club had been keen to bring the attacker back to the south coast.

“We’re thrilled to have Abu back at Pompey – it’s no secret that we’ve wanted him to return for some time,” Mousinho said.

“Abu returns a more experienced player, with Championship and top-flight Spanish appearances under his belt. Now we’re looking forward to seeing what he can do at this level in a Pompey shirt.”

Kamara began his career in Norwich City’s academy and progressed through the ranks before joining Portsmouth on loan in 2023.

Following his impressive campaign with Pompey, he made a permanent move to Hull City, where he scored five goals in 40 appearances.

The forward spent much of the 2025/26 season on loan at Spanish La Liga side Getafe, gaining valuable top-flight experience and featuring against Spanish heavyweights Barcelona and Real Madrid.

His return to Portsmouth now gives Kamara an opportunity to continue his development while helping the club compete at a higher level.

The Ghanaian-born attacker’s pace, creativity and versatility in the final third are expected to add another dimension to Portsmouth’s attack as they prepare for the new campaign.
