Sidney Govou is expressing serious concerns about Olympique Lyonnais’ competitiveness this season. Now without a club, the former Lyon winger believes the team is weaker following the departures of key players like Bafétimbi Gomis and Jimmy Briand, and he’s unsure whether OL can remain a top contender in Ligue 1.
In an interview with Le Progrès, Govou stated:
“I can’t get it out of my head that it will be even harder without Gomis and Briand. Bafé has scored 15 goals per season on average in Ligue 1, and the entire weight of the attack falls on Lacazette, who can’t overplay his responsibilities either. (…) Against TFC, I see a rather complicated match for OL, who despite their good start, are in my opinion a notch below last season’s team.”
Govou, who himself once scored Lyon’s last goal away to Toulouse, knows the importance of experience and depth in attack. His remarks highlight a broader concern among OL supporters who fear that the club’s lack of reinforcements could derail their ambitions this season. All eyes will be on Lyon as they take on Toulouse on Matchday 2, with Alexandre Lacazette now bearing the burden of leading the attack.
