SHOCKING: Al Ahly’s benchmark for coaches revealed
Pressure is mounting on Al Ahly SC head coach Jess Thorup following the club’s exit from the CAF Champions League, with fresh reports shedding light on the unforgiving standards expected of managers at the Cairo giants.
As revealed by AfricaSoccer.com, the club’s hierarchy is set to make a decision on Thorup’s future after the team’s elimination at the hands of Espérance de Tunis, who secured victory in the return leg in Cairo earlier this week.
Amid the uncertainty, Egyptian journalist Mohamed Fares has outlined the stark reality facing coaches who take charge at Al Ahly, stressing that survival is tied directly to results on the biggest stage.
“We must understand that if a manager is below the level and pressure of Al Ahly, they won’t even survive until the end of the season,” Fares wrote on Facebook.
He pointed to the precedents set by former coaches such as Pitso Mosimane and Marcel Koller, noting that even successful tenures were defined by a clear expectation. “There was a clear benchmark: losing the CAF Champions League means departure. This is a critical point to remember,” he added.
Fares further revealed that Thorup’s contract includes an early termination clause, giving the club the option to end the relationship swiftly should results continue to fall short.
The Danish tactician now finds himself under intense scrutiny in one of African football’s most demanding environments, where success in both continental competitions and the domestic league is non-negotiable.
Currently, Al Ahly sit third in the Egyptian Premier League standings, three points behind rivals Zamalek SC, following a recent 1-0 defeat to Smouha SC.
Thorup was appointed after the dismissal of Jose Riveiro, who lasted just four months in the role, underlining the club’s low tolerance for underperformance.
With their continental ambitions now over for the season, Al Ahly will turn their full attention to the domestic campaign, as Thorup battles to steady the team and secure his position.
