Zamalek captain Mahmoud Abdel Razek Shikabala believes the club’s Egyptian Cup victory is only the beginning of a major rebuild.
Though the Whites lifted the cup after a dramatic 8-7 penalty win over Pyramids following a 1-1 draw, the veteran skipper admitted the season fell short of the club’s high standards.
Speaking on Friday, Shikabala said in a TV interview: “God willing, next season we will support the team, and the situation will be completely different. The board of directors, headed by Hussein Labib, will sign new players who deserve to wear the Zamalek shirt and defend it.”
“The Egyptian Cup is very precious, and it came at the right time, in order to dedicate it to the Zamalek fans… (goalkeeper) Mohamed Awwad told me that we would get the cup on penalties. When I scored the last penalty, it made me feel that the championship was something I wanted to win.”
The cup win brings relief to fans, but Shikabala’s message is clear, next season, Zamalek is aiming for more.
