Sherif Ekramy reflects on Egypt’s exit from Africa Cup: “13 years without progress”

Sherif Ekramy, the goalkeeper of Pyramid FC, has commented on Egypt’s elimination from the Africa Cup of Nations at the hands of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The national team bid farewell to the Africa Cup of Nations with a penalty shootout loss to Congo in the Round of 16 of the “CAN 2023,” as the Pharaohs failed to reclaim the title absent since 2010.

Ekramy took to his official “X” platform account to share a message, stating: “Thirteen years have passed since Egypt’s last triumph, and five years since the disappointment of Russia 2018.

Have we progressed a step? Has anything changed? Football, a game respected globally, except in Egypt, where even African nations of lesser standing now outpace us by great distances.

When will we realize the extent of our lag? When will we comprehend that the fundamental flaw and deep-seated issue lie in the mindset, in the administration, in the very sports culture itself? Changing coaches or players is merely replacing the surface of a weak foundation, a foundation that is irreparable.

Evading the truth will not alter its ugliness, and rest assured that arrogance and stubbornness will only augment its ugliness.”

He continued, “Get ready to hear cries for change, calls for dismissals, and the voices of criticism and mockery, ultimately leading to nothing.

Get ready to hear the same opinions and the same suggestions that will drive us further backward, faster.

Unfortunately, the level of Egyptian football aligns perfectly with its industry and administration.

We never change our conviction; we change only when we lose hope, change against our will.”

The former Egyptian national team goalkeeper concluded his message, saying: “As a player belonging to this field, I first apologize to football and apologize to the Egyptian people who adore the sport and have lost faith in their country’s football.”
