Shay Given warns Arsenal over Vinicius Junior gamble despite transfer appeal

Former Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Shay Given believes Arsenal’s reported pursuit of Vinicius Junior would undoubtedly strengthen their attack, but has warned that signing the Brazilian could also threaten the squad unity that has become the foundation of Mikel Arteta’s success.

The Gunners are reportedly prioritising a move for the Real Madrid winger as they look to build on last season’s Premier League triumph, their first league title in 22 years. With Vinicius’ future at the Santiago Bernabeu increasingly uncertain, Arsenal have emerged as one of the clubs linked with a sensational transfer.

The Brazil international is entering the final year of his contract with Real Madrid, while negotiations over a new deal have reportedly stalled over wage demands. That has fuelled speculation the Spanish giants could face losing one of their biggest stars, either this summer or on a free transfer next year.

Speaking to BOYLE Sports, Given acknowledged Arsenal’s ambition in targeting a player of Vinicius’ calibre but questioned whether such a high-profile arrival would come without consequences.

“Could Vinicius Jnr be the sort of player to add the quality Arsenal need in the final third? Yes, and it shows you the level that Arsenal are at that this sort of deal is even being spoken about, and of course the financial power they now have to back it up.”

‘It’s a risk’ for Arsenal

While praising the winger’s quality, Given suggested the enormous financial commitment required to complete the transfer could alter the balance within Arteta’s dressing room.

He highlighted the culture Arsenal have carefully built over recent seasons, pointing to the departures of high-profile figures as a key factor behind the club’s resurgence.

“Arsenal have become renowned over the last couple of years for being this team that has a real togetherness after moving on the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil. Everyone in that squad now feels like they’re pulling in the same direction.”

Given stressed that his concerns were not about Vinicius’ work ethic, but rather the wider impact such a marquee signing could have on a squad built on collective spirit.

“I’m not saying Vinicius Jnr doesn’t defend or wouldn’t fit into that group but it’s a risk but I suppose you have to take risks to bring something different to a team like that, and he’s a brilliant player.”

Despite the warning, the former Newcastle United and Manchester City goalkeeper admitted Arsenal would be making one of the biggest statements in modern Premier League history if they secured the deal.

“It would be the biggest transfer news of the year if Arsenal signed him.”

Real Madrid future remains uncertain

Vinicius has been a central figure for Real Madrid since joining from Flamengo in 2018, winning multiple major honours and establishing himself as one of the world’s most dangerous attackers.

However, uncertainty surrounding his contract has intensified speculation over his long-term future in Spain. With only one year remaining on his current deal, Madrid risk seeing the 26-year-old leave for nothing next summer if an agreement cannot be reached.

Reports have also linked the European giants with a blockbuster move for RB Leipzig star Yan Diomande in a deal that could be worth up to £100 million, adding further intrigue to Vinicius’ future.
