Sharpe backs Manchester United’s decision to keep faith in Amad Diallo over Garnacho
Former Manchester United winger Lee Sharpe has backed manager Ruben Amorim’s decision to retain Amad Diallo and sell Alejandro Garnacho to Chelsea last summer.
Sharpe believes the Ivorian winger is beginning to justify the club’s faith with a series of mature performances this season.
Garnacho left Old Trafford for Stamford Bridge in August after Amorim identified Amad as his preferred wide option.
While both players have enjoyed strong starts to the season, Sharpe insists United made the right call by prioritising Amad’s development.
He told Tribalfootball.com: “Oh absolutely I would 100% agree with that. I think Garnacho, as much ability as he’s got, I think his decision-making is a little bit poor.
“I was one of those people that thought it might be worth a gamble letting him go. I think the decisions he gave the manager is now starting to just take shape and show that it was the right decision.”
Sharpe praised Amad’s growing influence on the right flank, noting his link-up play and versatility.
“Yeah, I think it’s really good. I think he works well. I think he works really well with (Bryan) Mbeumo. I think it is quite handy that he does have the left foot.
“I think he’s quite happy to go down the outside at times, but it’s nice that he can cut in and cause some trouble when we’re in that offensive position.”
The former winger, however, highlighted areas for improvement, particularly Amad’s defensive awareness.
“I think defensively, positionally, and his decision making defensively. I think he’s done a really good job so far. It’s not his natural position, there is a lot more responsibility defensively for him, but I think he’s doing a good job.”
Sharpe also warned that United could face depth issues if Amad suffers an injury.
“The manager doesn’t really play out and out wingers… Maybe they need another winger on the other side to play the wing-back role.”
The 52-year-old concluded that Amad’s work ethic and willingness to adapt make him one of United’s most consistent performers this season.
