Shandu says return to Durban City has been ‘smooth transition’ after Pirates exit

Durban City utility player Bandile Shandu says returning to the club has been a “smooth transition” after he left Orlando Pirates at the end of last season.

The versatile 31-year-old spent five seasons with the Soweto club after joining them in 2021 from Maritzburg United, the team which later rebranded as Durban City.

Shandu says he has quickly settled back into familiar surroundings and credited the club’s players and staff for the welcome he has received since completing his move.

“I think it’s been a smooth transition. Coming back home really feels good. I’m happy to be here,” Shandu told the club’s media department.

The player, who can operate in several positions, also expressed his appreciation for being given such a warm reception on his return.

“Happy to be back at the club. The club welcomed me very, very well. I’m also grateful for that and I appreciate that.

“I’m just thankful and grateful to be back.”

Shandu’s return comes after his spell with Orlando Pirates, where he spent five seasons following his move from Maritzburg United in 2021. The club he previously left has since adopted the name Durban City.

He believes the close relationship already developing within the current squad can help the club meet its targets during the new Betway Premiership season.

“Yeah, I think we have a great squad. I think the camaraderie we have is very great,” he added.

“We’ve got like a brotherhood going and I think that’s what’s going to help us in terms of games, in terms of throughout the season.”

Shandu said the welcome extended by Durban City went beyond the playing squad, with the technical team also helping him feel immediately at home.

“They welcomed me very, very well. The technical team as well, it felt like I’ve been here for years, you know, so I’m truly grateful for that and I thank the guys for welcoming me back very, very, very smoothly and I really appreciate that.”

His comments underline the importance he places on the atmosphere within the squad as Durban City prepare for the challenges ahead. Rather than needing a lengthy period to adjust, Shandu says the reception from the club has allowed him to settle in without difficulty.

The former Orlando Pirates player will now look to contribute to Durban City’s ambitions in the Betway Premiership, with the team’s unity identified by Shandu as a key part of their approach throughout the season.
