Sevilla returned to winning ways in LaLiga by beating Osasuna 2-0 at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium, a result which strengthened their hold on sixth place.
The victory ended a three-match winless run for the hosts and moved them to within two points of fifth-placed Real Sociedad. Osasuna remain 12th after another disappointing away result, having won just one of their past 12 league matches on the road, with two draws and nine defeats.
Osasuna created the first opening in the fourth minute when Flavien Boyomo headed wide from a corner. Sevilla responded when Felix Correia sent a volley off target, while Ante Budimir also failed to take advantage of a promising opportunity for the visitors.
The hosts eventually took control in the 24th minute through a well-worked attack. Youssouf Fofana flicked Correia’s pass into the path of Isaac Romero, who kept his composure to guide the ball beyond Aitor Fernandez.
It was Romero’s third goal of the season and made him Sevilla’s top scorer. However, the club’s 15 league goals at that point had been scored by 12 different players.
Sevilla pressed for a second before half-time. Castrin shot over the bar, while Chidera Ejuke forced Fernandez into a low save as the home side grew in confidence after going ahead.
The pace of the match dropped after the interval, with fouls and stoppages interrupting Sevilla’s momentum. They began to threaten again midway through the second half, though, when Fernandez tipped Youssouf Fofana’s free-kick behind.
Juan Iglesias then came close to doubling the advantage, striking the post with a volley. Fernandez made another important intervention later in the match to keep out Kike Salas and preserve Osasuna’s hopes of taking something from the game.
Sevilla finally secured the points eight minutes from time. Correia’s attempt took a deflection before finding the net, giving him his second goal of the season and confirming a convincing home victory.
The result also extended Sevilla’s winning run at home against La Liga sides outside the traditional top three to five matches.
